Who Are Chery, Geely, Jaecoo, Omoda, Leapmotor, Xpeng, and Changan? The New Chinese Car Brands in the UK Explained

The UK car market is changing and evolving quickly with the arrival of many new names, but who are the new Chinese car brands looking to make their mark, such as Chery, Geely, Jaecoo, Omoda, Xpeng, and Changan?

In this blog, we’ll explain who these brands are, what cars they have on offer, and how they could shape the future of motoring in the UK.

Chery

Chery is one of China’s largest carmakers and biggest exporters, with millions of cars sold globally. The Chery name will not be known to many, but they are behind two of the most exciting brands on the market right now, Omoda and Jaecoo, with the Omoda 5 and Jaecoo 7 already proving to be popular.

The Chery brand manufactures the Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar models in China through a joint venture with JLR. Chery’s background gives them a strong foothold already as it brings two SUVs to the UK in the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8.

Chery’s strategy is to compete on value, design, and long warranties, making it a serious challenger to established brands.

Geely

Geely isn’t a name you may recognise in its own right, but you will recognise some of its other brands like Volvo, Polestar, and LEVC (London Taxi Company).

With many brands already part of the group, Geely now plans to launch under its own name in the UK with the all-electric SUV Geely EX5 set to go on sale soon.

The Geely EX5 will be equipped with a 60.2 kWh battery with a claimed range of up to 267 miles, with fast charging set to allow the car to charge from 30 to 80% in around 20 minutes.

Jaecoo and Omoda

As mentioned earlier in the blog, Jaecoo and Omoda have quickly become established names, with both making their mark. From nothing, they made up nearly 3% of all new car registrations in the UK as of August 2025.

The brand currently sells the Omoda 5, a mid spec SUV, with an all-electric and hybrid version available. Soon, the Omoda 7 and 9 will also be available to UK drivers.

The Jaecoo 7 has proven a big hit for the UK market so far, with the premium SUV coming with a super hybrid or petrol option.

Leapmotor

Leapmotor is part of the Stellantis group which includes brands such as Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall, Jeep and Alfa Romeo. The brand launched in early 2025 with the T03 and C10 models offering easier access to electric vehicles with the T03 a small city car starting from only £15,995 making it one of the cheapest brand-new cars in the UK. The C10 meanwhile is a smart SUV offering a premium feel from only £36,500.

Xpeng

Billed as the ‘Tesla Rival’, Xpeng has been wowing car reviewers in recent months with its impressive Xpeng G9 SUV and P7 saloon, with both offering a premium but affordable alternative to Tesla.

The Xpeng G9 is the larger of the two cars available, boasting a flagship range and spec. It features a range of up to 354 miles and supports fast charging of up to 300kW, with a 10-80% charge time of around 20 minutes.

Xpeng’s G6, meanwhile, will compete with the Tesla Model Y with a standard and long-range variant on offer. Depending on which variant you choose, you could benefit from up to 354 miles and fast charging speeds of up to 215kW to give up to 80% charge in only 20 minutes.

Changan

Perhaps the most unknown on this list but with one of the richest histories, Changan has been making cars since 1862 in China, now it plans to take the UK with its offering. Presently, Changan works with Ford and Mazda and has built cars for both in China. The expansion into the UK and Europe is happening at pace, with dealerships starting to appear. Changan’s UK R&D centre has been in Birmingham since 2010.

The Changan Deepal S07 is the first model to reach the UK with a 79.97kWh battery delivering up to 295 miles of range with the all-electric SUV benefiting from a seven-year warranty.
